Helping Your Child to Become a Better Reader

Reading is so important! This is why our Nightly Reading program is key to your child's success as a reader. Many parents enjoy reading with their children and would like to assist them to become stronger, more fluent readers. If you are interested in learning more about how you can help your child improve with his/her reading, click here.

Our Classroom Homework Policy

In general, our classroom policy is that if you have not finished your daily work in class, then it is brought home for completion. Some assignments are "in-class" assignments and need to be completed on time within the classroom. In the case of visual arts assignments, we have our lesson and begin our project on a day 1 and it is due the following day 1. Students are welcome to bring their artwork home and complete it during this week between classes.

A rule of thumb to help you decide how much homework your child should be doing, is to take your child's grade and multiply it by 10 minutes. For grade four this would be 40 minutes each weekday evening. Included in this 40 minutes is our 20 minutes of nightly reading. After that, any work not completed in class should be finished. If your child does not have any work from class I recommend breaking this time down into the following activities...
- 20 minutes of nightly reading
- 10 minutes of math fact practice (adding/subtracting/multiplying/dividing)
- 10 minutes of recorder practice and/or review of our spelling words

For other ideas you can always use the Home School Connection box from our classroom newsletter.

Helping with Spelling

Our spelling program runs as follows...
- each spelling group (we have 4) studies a list of 10 words for 2 weeks.
- words include homonyms (e.g. wear, where), words from our units of study and words that we are having
   trouble with in daily writing.
- students complete activities and visit centres to help them learn their words.
- a test takes place on the Thursday or Friday of the second week.
- all of our spelling lists are recorded in our agendas so that parents may assist with study.

Interested in including additional spelling words for your child to study? Try using the Dolch word list. This includes the 220 most frequently found words in books that children read.
